Madison Board of Selectmen Highlights:

  • Used TIF funds to take down and old school building and create beautiful municipal park and playground near the center of town.
  • Took down another old, abandoned school and used the lot to create an area for an ice rink and summer volleyball court.
  • Repurposed another old, abandoned school for a community meeting space, food cupboard, place for Historical Society, local CATV station studio. Added playground and community garden in recent years to this site.
  • In 2014, Madison suffered $150,000,000 devaluation of paper mill after municipal budget had been constructed and approved by voters. Found creative ways to reduce costs. Mill rate went from $16.00 to $19.75. Mill closed in 2016. Tax rate went to $21.50. Mill rate remained at $21.50 until 2019 when we were able to reduce the mill rate to $21.25. Municipal budget went from $3.2 million in 2014 down to $2.7 million for 2019.
  • Successfully defended Town of Madison valuation of Madison Paper Mill facility through the State Board of Property Tax Review hearing. Madison won the case. UPM has appealed to Maine Supreme Court and Madison is waiting on that appeal.
  • In 2015-2016, Madison eliminated the municipal police force. Negotiated agreement with Somerset County Sheriff to provide round the clock policing in Town of Madison for about $200,000 less than the Madison Police Department cost. This agreement remains in place today and is working very well.
  • Helped create TIF arrangement to help Woodlands Nursing Home become a reality in Madison.
